How to Spend A $50 Day in Bloomfield: Watessing Park Area Edition

Whether it’s a walk in the park, grabbing a quick bite, or looking for an activity to fill the afternoon, Bloomfield has options for all in this little town, without breaking the bank. This third part of the series “Bloomfield on a Budget” will explore spaces located near the Watsessing Park area of the town. Keep reading to discover affordable options all around the Watsessing Park area of Bloomfield, New Jersey.

The challenge: Eat at least 2 meals and enjoy at least 1 activity for $50 or less in Bloomfield (tip, tax, + fees will be extra).

Option #3: $47.75

A car can be used to arrive at the Watsessing Park area. If taking public transportation, there are a number of bus stops that line the park including Bloomfield Avenue at Municipal Plaza, Bloomfield Avenue at Burroughs Place, + Conger Street at Glenwood Avenue, near the park’s main entrance. There are also six other stops that surround the park including Glenwood Avenue at Second Street, Glenwood Avenue at Evergreen Avenue, Prospect Street at Locust Avenue, Dodd Street at Glenwood Avenue, + Dodd Street at Colonial Terrace.

Meal #1: $3.75

Make a stop at 23 Skiddoo Cafe on Carteret Street. This Cafe has early hours (7AM-2PM Monday through Saturday + 8AM-2PM on Sunday) making it a great place to have breakfast or lunch. Owner Hodge Halili says “all pastries and baked goods are made in house.” So diners can be sure they’re getting a fresh muffin, scone, or danish. Try the spinach + ricotta danish while stopping by and enjoy it at one of the many tables inside or out if the weather is nice. Other options to try are the apple turnover, almond creme croissant, + raisin danish. These items range in price but will keep buyers within the $50 budget. Skiddoo Cafe also has a table of free books available for customers.

Holding just under 70 acres of land, Watsessing Park sits between Bloomfield + East Orange. The park is about a two-minute walk from 23 Skiddoo Cafe and will put pedestrians near the entrance by Carterest Street + Cleveland Terrace. Watsessing Park is a great space to go for a walk, read that free book from Skiddoo Cafe, or enjoy a sporting event. This outdoor space holds a bandstand, basketball court, + athletic fields. Within the park sits a cricket field where the Garden State Cricket League holds matches. Passers-by can get a midday walk in, or sit and watch a match (weather permitting).

 


 

Meal #2: $12

After walking through the park, be sure to exit via the Conger Street + Bloomfield Avenue entrance, as this allows easy access to the next stop on this list: Six Points Pub. Six Points Pub is about a two-minute walk from Watsessing Park. The establishment serves pub food, making it a great spot to grab an order of wings, which are $12 on the menu. Wings are available in Buffalo, mango habanero, BBQ, or honey sriracha and come with carrot + celery sticks. Other options to try are tendies (homemade chicken tenders served with a choice of sauce), pub nachos (homemade house tortilla chips, cheese sauce, homemade guacamole, chipotle mayo, + sour cream), SPP veggie quesadilla (tortilla filled with cheese and mushrooms, served with homemade guacamole, pico de gallo, chipotle mayo and sour cream on the side), SPP cobb (Romaine lettuce, avocado, egg, tomato, bacon, blue cheese tossed in a house-made honey dijon dressing), + bean bowl (slow-cooked beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, cilantro, hard-boiled egg, and avocado). Buyers need not beware as all of these options are within the $12 range.

Activity #2: $32

bury the hatchet bloomfield

About a six-minute walk will put visitors at the last stop: Bury the Hatchet. This axe-throwing establishment has options available for one-hour sessions for $32. There is also space to sit + chat, or play games like Jenga, foosball, + giant Connect Four. It will exceed the budget, but if looking to add more to the fun, there are package options that include items other than axes such as stars, spears, + more to throw at targets. Bury the Hatchet is also BYOB so throwers are welcome to bring their beverage of choice.
