20 Cool Spots to Spend Father’s Day in the Northern New Jersey Area

Summertime brings along some holidays worth celebrating. This year, Father’s Day falls on June 21st, and is a time to celebrate dads, uncles, brothers, + father figures alike. Since there’s no one-size-fits-all activity for the variety of father figures in our lives, The Montclair Girl team picked some of our favorite activities to do with our favorite guys, no matter their interests. Keep reading for more information about Father’s Day activities, both indoors + outdoors, in the Greater Montclair area.

For the Active Dad

Axe Throwing at Bury the Hatchet | 672 Bloomfield Avenue, Bloomfield

Axe throwing can be a great way to spend Father’s Day this year. Bury the Hatchet is located on Bloomfield Avenue + has lots of space for the whole family. There are lanes for axe throwing, in addition to spear throwing + other weaponry available upon request. There are other games on site, such as giant Connect Four and Jenga. The space is also BYOB.

Baseball Game Hinchliffe Stadium | 186 Maple Street, Paterson

If there’s a baseball fanatic celebrating this Father’s Day, keep the celebration local by checking out a baseball game at Hinchliffe Stadium. The New Jersey Jackals will take on the Down East Bird Dawgs on Sunday, June 15th. Visitors can enjoy a classic like peanuts or Cracker Jack, or try the concession stand or on-site food trucks.

For an indoors, all-ages, and all skill-levels get-together, try bowling this Father’s Day. Bowlero in Belleville is a bowling alley for all levels. There are options available for food and beverages as well, like wings, fries, pizza, + burgers.

Earthquake’s Father’s Day Comedy at NJPAC | 1 Center Street, Newark

This Father’s Day, try letting loose (and letting out a few laughs) at Earthquake’s Father’s Day Comedy show. The show is an annual affair on Father’s Day. This special comedy night will feature Earthquake, Deray Davis, Chico Bean, + B Simone.

Fitzgerald’s 5K + The Nipper 2-Mile Run | 865 Bloomfield Avenue, Glen Ridge

Father’s Day can come a little early this year. If looking to celebrate before the big day, sign up for the Fitzgerald’s 5K + the Nipper 2-Mile run that takes place on Sunday, June 14th. Racers can sign up for one or both of these races. It is open to all speeds and levels of racing. Races will take place rain or shine.

Montclair 10K + 2 Mile Fun Run at YMCA Montclair | 25 Park Street, Montclair

Father’s Day can come even earlier with the Montclair YMCA. This location is organizing a 10K + 2-mile fun run on Sunday, June 7th. The race will take place in rain or shine, and the starting point is in front of the YMCA. All proceeds from the race go to the Y’s Community Health Program Fund.

Unlimited Arcade Experience at Hometown Arcade | 85 Washington Street, Bloomfield

A rainy day activity or just a day to spend inside with dad is visiting Hometown Arcade in Bloomfield. This arcade space has unlimited play starting at $20. The arcade also has a bar in the back with beers on tap. Patrons can play games throughout the decades while enjoying a crisp, refreshing pint. Kids can have fun playing some of Dad’s favorite classics.

For the DIY + Adventure Dad

Daddy + Me Paint Party | 382 Broad Street, Bloomfield

There is something so special about a daddy/daughter day. Gigi’s Princess Palace created a fun way to celebrate this Father’s Day with a paint party on Sunday, June 14th at 3PM. 


 

Play Bocce | Various Spots

Courts for playing bocce, a classic lawn game, can be found at Veterans Memorial Park in Bergenfield or Riverside Park in Lyndhurst. For those unfamiliar with the game, the rules for how to play are posted near the courts.

Cocktail Making Class at Bar Academy 101 | 450 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona

Those who enjoy celebrating with a nice cocktail should consider taking a class at Bar Academy 101. Dad can enjoy a cocktail when he orders it for the day, but he can enjoy it whenever he wants if he knows how to make it. Classes to consider are Martini Making, Shot Making, Sangria Making, Craft Beer Tasting, as well as several certifications to choose from.

Mastering the Grill with Michelin Chef at Passion for Spices | 31 Woodland Avenue, Summit

Passion for Spices is hosting a Father’s Day-themed cooking class for the dad who loves to grill. On Friday, June 19th from 6PM to 8:30PM, guests can take part in Mastering the Grill: Father’s Day Special at the Summit cooking school. The hands-on class will take place at 31 Woodland Avenue and is designed for anyone looking to level up their grilling skills while celebrating Father’s Day weekend.

Cooking Class at Kitchen Table | 1851 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood

Kitchen Table is hosting a Father’s Day class for steak lovers. On Sunday, June 21st from 11AM to 2PM, guests can join Chef Melissa for Steakhouse Favorites, a hands-on lunch focused on the professional techniques behind classic steakhouse cooking. The class is designed for anyone looking to master a memorable steakhouse-style meal from start to finish.

Spend an Afternoon at the Garfield Multicultural Food + Music Festival | 20th Century Field, 75 Elizabeth Street, Garfield

The Garfield Multicultural Food + Music Festival is a great Father’s Day weekend pick for the dad who loves good food, live music, and a lively outdoor scene. Taking place on Saturday, June 14th from 11AM to 7PM at 20th Century Field, the festival will feature a variety of food vendors, music, and multicultural celebrations for the whole family to enjoy.

Swing Some Clubs at Darlington Golf Course | 277 Campgaw Road, Mahwah

If Dad is a golfer at heart, take him to the Darlington Golf Course in Mahwah. For adults, weekend rates are $45 for 18 holes and $36 for twilight times. For those playing nine holes, the cost is $37 on weekends.

Go for a Walk at Palisades Interstate Park | Henry Hudson Drive, Fort Lee

The Palisades Interstate Park showcases local history from historic homes to exhibits on the American Revolution. Beyond this, the park has views of Manhattan, walking paths, and picnic areas. Visitors can also drive along Henry Hudson Drive and take in the Manhattan skyline and the New Jersey Palisades.

Spend a Day at Ramapo Valley Country Reservation | 608 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah

Mahwah’s Ramapo Valley County Reservation is the largest park in Bergen County, with scenic trails, lake views, and plenty of space to explore. BG suggests bringing Dad — and the dog — for a hike along the 7.3-mile trail, then making a post-walk pit stop for lunch nearby.

Darlington County Park is Mahwah’s golden summertime spot featuring a swimming lake, a splash zone, sports courts, walking paths, and picnic areas. BG suggests checking the park out with Dad and cooling down in the lake.

Go to Van Saun County Park + Zoo | 216 Forest Avenue, Paramus

Paramus’ Van Saun County Park has walking trails, picnic areas, and the Bergen County Zoo right on site. BG suggests taking Dad for a sunny stroll around the park, stopping by the zoo to see the animals, and hopping on the train ride for a fun little throwback moment.

For the Chill Dad

Cats in the Garden at Van Vleck Gardens | 21 Van Vleck Street, Montclair

The Jaguar Touring Club of New Jersey will be visiting the Van Vleck Gardens + provide a showing of modern + classic cars. On Sunday, June 21st, from 12PM to 3PM, the gardens are expected to be filled with blooming flowers in addition to these exquisite vehicles. No registration is needed for this event. The rain date will be Sunday, June 22nd.

Father’s Day BBQ with the Community of Newark | 1016 Brad Street, Newark

Sometimes the best meals are the ones we don’t have to make. The BBQ in Newark is free and will be held from 12PM to 5PM. All are invited to enjoy BBQ food, as well as play games + sports available for the whole family.

Father’s Day Movie Screening at Yogi Berra Museum | 8 Yogi Berra Drive, Little Falls

For the dads who like movies, stop by the Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls. The museum is holding a screening of Extra Innings: Grandpa Got Game. A Q+A will follow the screening and will be led by the film’s director, Rob Mandelberg, and Larry Berra.
