About the Opening

Owner Stephanos Frangos has been in the restaurant business his entire life, growing up in the diner industry and pushing his first bus cart at five. He managed several big-name restaurants in the area, including The Cheesecake Factory, The Tick Tock Diner, and Sushi Lounge, eventually opening Kafe Neo, a crêperie and cafe in Totowa, where he is still a co-owner.

Stephanos decided he wanted to open a spin-off of Kafe Neo, something small and specialized. “I took the idea of drinks and elevated it. I wanted to make beverages better in every way,” Stephanos told The Montclair Girl. “I was looking to specialize in certain things, do them well, and bring people beverages the way I like drinking them.”

Stephanos is often at the shop helping patrons and working alongside the friendly staff, helping customers, and customizing beverages to fit their needs.

The Menu

Nectar’s beverage menu has something for everyone, including juices, smoothies, premium loose-leaf teas from around the world, coffee paired with organic milk and flavors, specialty beverages like chai, matcha, and turmeric lattes, and wellness shots. Stephanos is health-obsessed, down to each ingredient. He focuses on getting as many organic ingredients as possible and locally made items, such as the coffee freshly roasted in Brooklyn by Caffè Vita. The smoothies are a big hit among customers largely due to the cashew milk made in-house.

Nectar also serves a small selection of fresh baked goods delivered daily from Balthazar Bakery in Englewood and gluten-free, plant-based sweet treats from Planted Eats in Montville. Additionally, the shop sells a few packaged items, including CBD tea from Sippy Hippy and raw honey made locally at a farm in Lincoln Park.

Goodbye Plastic

To match its quality ingredients, Nectar also uses materials that are good for the environment and customers’ health. At the top of the list is removing plastic, instead serving juices and smoothies in glass, reusable containers. Nectar encourages customers to bring the bottles back, either to return or to reuse them for a new beverage. The team currently provides 50 cents of store credit every time a customer brings a bottle back, which will soon increase to a dollar. Biodegradable straws are available to pair with the glass containers.

Nectar serves hot beverages in NoTree cups, made from sugarcane and bamboo fiber and free from harmful plastic liners and chemicals. Even the brewing process removes plastic, instead using all stainless steel French presses for coffee and glass for tea.
